Make It Fair is led and supported by a broad, statewide coalition of community, faith and labor organizations who have joined together to address the deep flaws in California’s commercial property tax system.
We support Prop. 13’s important protections for homeowners and renters; unfortunately, some big corporations and wealthy commercial property owners are using loopholes in the law to avoid paying their fair share in taxes and shifting that burden to residential homeowners and small businesses. This means California is losing billions in revenue every year that could be used
to make our communities better places to live and work.

We support the establishment of regular and fair reassessment of commercial and industrial property to market value while protecting small businesses and maintaining Proposition 13 protections for residential properties including homeowners and renters.

We are committed to the following principles:

  • Assess commercial and industrial property at fair market value and close commercial property tax loopholes,
  • Invest the resulting funds ($9 billion a year) in education and neighborhood services we all need and deserve including health access, housing, equity and quality of life;
  • Protect homeowners and renters from any changes,
  • Provide tax relief for small businesses, and
  • Include accountability provisions so new funds are spent appropriately.
